William Shakespeare was born on this day in 1564.  He also died on this day in 1616, at the age of 52.  This painting (1610) is the only portrait done of him during his lifetime, so it’s likely the closest to what he actually looked like.  It was the source image that many other artists used to create the more famous (bald??) likenesses we see more commonly today.  For more information about it, look up the “Cobbe” Shakespeare.
